Penmon Point and "Morning Bob"

It was Pete's 50th and to celebrate he hired one of the lighthouse keepers cottages at Penmon Point, Anglesey.  Piggy, Kerry, Fern & Chris along with Paul & Ellen and myself were to join him.

Anyone who has been to Penmon Point will have seen these 2 majestic cottages, they are the closest houses to Puffin Island and we were very excited to be able to stop in one.  We stopped in No.1.

During the mid 90's I lived with Shaun in his post hippy days, it was a magical time.  The M65 was being completed and as a result the contractors were diverting a road and demolishing an old farm to make way for it.  Swampy had become a news sensation and it seemed that wherever construction work was taking place new age folk would gather and protest.  They wore tie dyed stuff and heavy Nepalese/Peruvian patterned clothing and it was no surprise to us when we saw that the old farm house had been invaded by our very own protesters.

One afternoon we stopped by to see what was going on.  Shaun was wearing his new age regalia so we were accepted by the clan and invited into the farmhouse.  Surprisingly it wasn't in such a bad condition, from the outside it looked like a wreck but on the inside it was quite acceptable.  It didn't have any electricity but it did have running water and the protesters had lit a shed load of joss sticks to mask the smell of damp.

And the reason I tell this story is because the house at Penmon wasn't much better than this squat.  It was the reverse situation, from the outside it looked magnificent but on the inside, well Jesus!  And this house didn't even benefit from burning joss sticks.

However, this wasn't going to distract us from having a fantastic time.  Pete had brought the air rifle complete with some exploding targets and on the first night we shot stuff, ace!  We flew the dragon kite, threw rocks into the sea, caught crabs (not from the bed sheets, although that wouldn't have surprised me!) and did a bit of fishing.  Piggy spent quality time with his Grandad, which he loves, he was pampered by Fern and Chris and insisted on giving Remy lots of kisses.  We spent time just sat around the kitchen table chatting and laughing, and it all felt quite special.

Darwin's speech really came on during our time away.  On a car trip I was explaining to Kerry that sometimes in Waterfoot I see a chap called Bob who doesn't really know me.  As I pass him in the car I open my window and shout in a loud Second World War Spitfire Pilots voice, "Morning Bob".  As I did the impression for Kerry Piggy immediately repeated it in the same tone.  It became my favouritest thing right away.
