Eff EU

So it feels like the world has changed in a very small amount of time with the UK voting to opt out of the EU. I feel like if last week’s vote had occurred this week the vote may have swung the other way. That way, after England were beat in the football by the mighty Iceland, the flags might have come down from the council house windows and flag poles and there would be less of this “ENGLAND…ENGLAND…ENGERLANDDDD” attitude. Yes we did win the World Cup in 1966, and less than a hundred years ago we had the largest empire the world had ever known but things are changing and they’re changing fast. There isn’t enough space in this world for multiple empires, there should only be one, the world empire.

I voted to remain in the EU. I voted this way because I tried to foresee what the world will be like in another 10,000 years. If human beings are still here I imagine race to be so diluted that it would be hard to define (and un-necessary!) where any one comes from. I would like the world to be a secular place, sure let people believe whatever nonsense they want to believe in but that shouldn’t be a driver to how people should run their lives. And in order to make the world a beautiful and effective place to live we will all need to be working together. If things are done right you can kind of imagine that 740,000,000 (pop. Europe) people should be able to do a job far more effectively than 60,000,000 (pop. UK). Staying in Europe at least was somewhere in the foundations of working together.

I could possibly understand people wanting to leave Europe when we were at the height of the Empire, maybe people might have thought Europe were holding us back, but now, Jesus, what have we got to offer the world? Maybe it’s time to rename ‘Great Britain’ isn’t it? It’s sounds a bit ‘dickish’ now, a bit like if Guernsey decided to prefix its name with ‘Glorious’.
