Edouard Boubat

For my birthday I was given a book by Edouard Boubat. For a chap like me who has everything I want in the world, books showing the works of photographers are an ideal present.

I had heard the name before and had seen some un-impressive images, but I had never delved into his work. I remember reading an article by Marc Riboud, a French Photographer (coincidently born only 3 months before Boubat in 1923) who was schooled by Cartier-Bresson, an unbelievable opportunity in most photographers eyes. Riboud went on to say that he regretted this opportunity, he felt like he was being moulded into another person’s style and in hindsight would have preferred to have found his own way and his own style. I get the impression that Boubat would have benefitted greatly from the education provided by Cartier Bresson and should have swapped places with Riboud.

However, saying all that I enjoyed his work. He was sometimes referred to as a “Peace Correspondent” and many of his photo’s show life as a beautiful journey, happy children, people in love, families enjoying themselves etc. He travelled through life with a camera choosing to record happy moments.
