Orrest Head

It was a dreary late autumn day but we were keen to get out of the house and go for a mooch. Kerry likes to wrap up warm and that's why she likes this season.

Coincidently, Orrest Head, the small fell we decided to climb, was the first fell that Wainwright ever ascended. He wrote "our first ascent in Lakeland, our first sight of mountains in tumultuous array across glittering waters, our awakening to beauty". I think this was Darwin's first ascent of a Lakeland fell too although I'm not too sure he'll appreciate it in the same way. He did make it to the top without too much whinging and wanting to be carried though and as we reached the summit the clouds cleared enough to see a "tumultuous array of mountains".
