The Gammon, the Scald and the Mercedes

I really love a meat joint cooked in the slow cooker for hours and hours. Lovely tender meat crumbling onto the plate yet full of juice and beautiful for the meal there and then but also for days after on a sandwich full of mayonnaise.

I had set a gammon joint off cooking in the morning and the house was full of the lovely aroma it gives off. This goes unappreciated in a house full of vegetarians but I love it. Darwin came into the kitchen looking for a biscuit, climbed on the side and on the way down slipped and grabbed hold of the slow cooker. The slow cooker came crashing onto the kitchen floor depositing its contents onto the floor and some onto Darwin’s foot.

Darwin’s screams were heard from outside by Kerry who came rushing in. I quickly stripped him and she took him upstairs to bathe his scalded foot in cold water. He eventually calmed down to a sob and was asking questions like “Am I going to die?” Kerry then took him to the hospital for further inspection.

The nurse treated his wound and asked for him to return the following day so she could check it for infection. I met them at the hospital after work. Despite there being a huge ugly blister the wound was thankfully superficial.

On the way out of the hospital Kerry found a van in her car. The hand brake had failed on the van and it rolled down the hill, hit her car and made a considerable mess.

Everything worked out OK though, I managed to save the gammon and Kerry got a Mercedes super car as a courtesy vehicle.
