August Sander
I went to see an exhibition of photographic work the other
weekend, the first in a long time, at the Tate in Liverpool.
Out of all the photographic subjects I love portraits the
most, and August Sander is a great portrait photographer. The Tate currently has an exhibition of Sander’s
“People of the 20th Century” works and they are quite
magnificent. Sander lets his photographs
do all the talking with very little need for narrative. Using large format cameras and glass
negatives he stuck with this technology throughout his live and refused to take
up the new technologies on the scene like the much more portable Leica
cameras. Consequently his work is sharp
and full of depth but has obvious human flaws brought on by long exposures and
movement.
Liverpool was looking good too!
