The Coal Road, Garsdale to Dent

We took a drive down the Coal Road from Garsdale to Dent the other weekend. In the proper olden days (18th century) the local people would mine poor quality coal in this area, hence the name of the road. However, in 1870 the railway came and it became far cheaper to buy coal from elsewhere. The railway is still there, both in Garsdale and Dent! My dad will have driven trains through here many a time when he was a train driver on the Settle to Carlisle railway.

It’s a lovely drive though. It could do with a tree or two but there are nice views to be had.
