Gary Gallagher

I came across an antiques stall over the weekend that reminded me of an old school friend.  His name is Gary Gallagher, and despite looking like a little Charlie Drake in a Duffle Coat at school he was rock hard and could run like a speeding buffalo.  I know this because occasionally I would chant the following to the tune "The day we went to Bangor"...

"Mental Gaz
turned into a spaz
the day he went to Leyland"

The key to a successful chant and get away was knowing the distance you should leave between him and you before you chanted.  Although a mentally fast sprinter he wasn't good at endurance, so by adding a little extra time to allow for a much slower run due to lots of laughing, I could outrun him most nights.

One night he had built a ramp on a hill to leap over on his Raleigh Chopper.  We all stood and watched as he sped towards the ramp, descending the hill like an actual bull on a Raleigh Chopper, going dangerously too fast. As he hit the ramp he pulled hard on the handle bars to maximize his ascent into the air, and then whilst in mid air the bike split into 3 pieces, this was going to be painful!

He chose to hang on the handle bars not knowing that as they dug into the ground without the front wheel, they would accelerate his little Charlie Drake body into the air like a boneless carcass wrapped in an old Duffle coat.  We were too busy laughing hysterically to help and being the hard bastard he was he didn't our help.  Before we could wipe the tears from our eyes he appeared, coat ripped, knees torn and face bleeding, but most surprisingly, laughing.
