The Ingleton Branch Line

We went for a little mooch in the woods by the River Lune today. We ascended the banks slowly until the land became a little flatter where we were channelled over a small bridge in the woods. It was immediately apparent that this is where an old railway used to run.

This particular line was the Ingleton branch line going from Ingleton to Lowgill stopping at Kirkby Lonsdale, Barbon & Sedbergh (as well as a few other places too small to mention). It always amazes me the spread of the railway in the Victorian times and to think it was possible to travel virtually anywhere in the country from the likes of Barbon, a village with a modern day population of 236 which would have been far less during the times of the railway.

We walked down a country lane and then decided to walk the railway back up to the bridge. I couldn’t help think that this must have been one of the prettiest railways in the country during its time.

I’m thinking that I’ll try and walk the line from Ingleton to Sedbergh one day soon.
