Gawthorpe Hall
So now we’re paid up members of the National Trust we need
to start making our money back. Part of
the reason we joined was a solution to the “What are we doing this weekend?”
question that regularly crops up. So on
Sunday we went to Gawthorpe Hall in Padiham, coincidentally our nearest NT
attraction.
We had to carry Darwin through the hall as the NT wouldn't
allow us to take his trike round, and quite sensibly too, there are far too
many stairs. In one of the rooms there
are some toys for kids to play with and Darwin was most excited about the pram. They also didn't allow photography, and as I've
mentioned before that really annoys me, but I managed to curb my annoyance.
Gawthorpe is a truly lovely hall though, c/w original Irish
panels and many other original features, and considering it was built in 1600
that’s quite impressive. One slightly
more modern feature, although rather dated now, were winch/block and tackle
thingies that were attached to the windows, and they were used as possible fire
escape things. Why don’t we have them
nowadays?
