This going up to Scotland during the Autumn/Winter thing is becoming a bit of a tradition now. This year Danny and I nipped up to the Speyside area, or at least that was the intention. Fact is we camped about 3 hours away from Speyside and we weren't driving, Ste, a whisky hater, was driving and to expect him to chauffeur us about stopping at every distillery we saw seemed a little unfair, so we only managed to get as far north as the Dalwhinnie distillery.
We took a tour of the Dalwhinnie distillery and it was a bit shit really. The distillery is sadly owned by alcohol mega giants Diageo (as are 15 other single malts) and as a result the distillery no longer runs like a self contained whisky making machine. They don't malt their own barley, they send their specifications off to a big Diageo malting plant and they don't have a master blender, they have a committee!!! WTF?
We stopped at 3 distilleries. Danny asked in a protesting way, "Why am I still doing this? I'm nearly 40". He did the face.
