Smardale
We visited Smardale today and did a walk on the old railway.
It’s absolutely amazing the amount of railway that used to be around 70 years
ago and then over a 20 year period over 7000 miles of railway abandoned. No
wonder mind you, by 1961 the railway was losing over £300,000 a day, and that’s
in old money.
However, it definitely left a mark on the landscape.
Nowadays we have effectively over 7000 miles of walk/cycle way and some of the
most impressive viaducts in the country.
We parked by the now converted Smardale railway station and
walked along the old track. It’s impressive. Who the hell would have got the
train to Smardale I don’t know, there’s 3 houses! But we’ll have to go back in
the Summer. We actually walked about 4.5 miles on that day much to the dismay
of Kerry, but it was a lovely walk in all. Maybe next time we’ll let Darwin
take his bike.
