I’ve spoken about Wastwater and it being the most beautiful place in England that I have ever been, however I might have found a contender.
I have rarely if ever spent much time in the Buttermere end of the Lakes and holy frick!
We went up to Whinlatter forest and had a mooch about. It’s quite lovely, England’s only true mountain forest allegedly (whatever the frig that means!). It was raining quite a bit but we didn’t mind. The mushrooms are out in force, always reminds me off Gibraltar Barracks in 88, and the mist was low and sporadic occasionally moving to reveal a lovely scene.
On the way back, sticking to our objective of doing different stuff, I drove by the shores of Crummock Water. Jesus, what a sight to behold. The clouds were present and adding drama to the scene and the colours were a mixture of summer & autumn infused. Absolutely magnificient.
I thought to myself that this must have been the subject for some great oil geniuses of times gone by so I did some googling. The first 2 images I came across were by ‘Turners’. One being the great William Turner and the other being William Lakin Turner, no relation. My Grandmother was a ‘Turner’! And then I found a beautiful modern painting by a chap named Martin Kinnear, stunning!
And then beyond Buttermere we travelled over Honister Pass. We live in a truly magnificent part of the world.
