Brainwashed at the Mucky Church
Darwin came home the other day singing a song about a lighthouse and how it shines in the dark and how he’ll follow it. My Christian metaphor alarm was going off. The nursery had taken the kids down to ‘messy church’, a local Methodist church in the town for a while.
Now I’m not anti-Christian, and I do believe that most Christians want to be good and want to promote goodness in humans, however, I do object greatly to when any religion tries to qualify faith as fact. That really riles me! It angers me that Darwin knows about Jesus and at this stage believes that he is real. It’s less of a concern knowing that he also thinks Father Christmas is real but we’ve taught him about Father Christmas, others have taught him about Jesus and God.
So to ease my fear I had a look at the website of the messy church. I was drawn to the section “Messy church does science” and found some topics and their associated material which teaches the young and vulnerable all about the subjects. The first topic I saw was ‘Earth, stars and space Dinosaur hunt”. Darwin likes space and he likes dinosaurs and we’ve done our best so far to teach him about the subject using facts that us humans know. In the messy church lesson it suggests:
Experiment
Construct a timeline with string. Get familiar with it by putting a cross on it and some familiar biblical/ historical markers. Where would we place dinosaurs? Theistic evolution would subscribe to an old universe (13.5 billion years since the beginning) so their timeline would start then. Young Earthers would put it at 10,000 years and equate dinosaurs with monsters mentioned in the Old Testament such as dragons and behemoths mentioned in Job, one of the oldest books in the Bible.
Big Thinking
Dinosaurs have been controversial amongst Christians for decades, since they relate to the theory of evolution. Christian scientists vary as to which approach they subscribe to and how they interpret Genesis. However, dinosaurs are not incompatible with trust in the biblical account, and there is lots of scientific evidence for dinosaurs.
Big questions
God designed the whole world, including dinosaurs, even though he knew they wouldn’t still be alive today. What can we learn from this about how creative God is?
Seriously, WTF? Young Earthers? Why teach kids about young earthers in this subject? Any one that believes in this way is an absolute idiot and is wrong, why even give any suggestion to kids that this might be correct? Are dinosaurs are controversial subject? No! “there is lots of scientific evidence for dinosaurs”, O FFS! “What can we learn from this about how creative God is?” I suggest that if there is a God don’t tarnish his amazingness with your idiotic beliefs!
And then I saw a session about Evolution.
“One thing that is special about humans is our big brains.” It says. Well it isn’t! The Sperm Whale has the largest brain, nearly 6 times larger than a human brain and if it’s the brain to body ratio then we’re outdone by birds, shrews, ants and mice.
“God has given us the means to look around us and weigh the evidence of our own existence as a created thing – and God is who we have been able to discern as our creator.” – Obviously written by someone with a very small brain, no it’s not! We’ve weighed up the evidence and so far we’ve learnt that life is accidental and where we are today is due to evolution by natural selection. Stop devaluing it with rubbish.
It goes on to say the creation isn’t quite as random as we think and that God created evolution.
It drives me mad. It’s indoctrination of vulnerable people!
