Ribblehead Viaduct

I had an afternoon to myself today so I grabbed the camera and set off into Yorkshire. First stop Dent. Brian S tells a story about being in a pub in Dent. He was in there having a drink once when a black man came in. The pub fell silent until one man stood up and shouted at the landlord to “get him out”. The man decided to exit himself. I’m no stranger to ‘blacking up’ but I wouldn’t go to Dent made up as a black man.

After my 5 minute exploration of Dent museum I made my way to Ribblehead viaduct. I’ve always thought it was an impressive structure and wonder how much of my enthusiasm for the bridge was nurtured into me by a father. He used to drive trains over this bridge and up and down the Settle to Carlisle railway. He even applied to go on Mastermind with his specialist subject being that railway. I walked under the bridge and up the embankment to the railway, it’s a pity a massive steamy didn’t go across whilst I was there.

As I wandered I did try to picture how the navvy camps were set up in the pock marked landscape. My dad was very knowledgeable about its construction and I must admit he bored me to tears with his facts. Strangely enough I find myself quite interested in it all now! Apparently a death was a bi-weekly occurrence when the bridge was being built.

Any road.
