Sometimes I get the impression Darwin doesn’t like the kids he doesn’t know. When he see’s anyone under the age of 5 he will often point and say quite scornfully “That’s a baby!”, or even “Don’t look at me”. On this occasion, in the play area of Whitaker Park, he called an over friendly little girl a “Baby” and then shouted “That’s not a monster, it’s a crocodile” and then made an expression a grotesque would be proud of.
The girl then made a noise like a monster and chased Darwin who in turn screamed and ran away laughing. They became best friends for the next 15 minutes.
He rode around the park at speeds that teetered on the edge of scaring me but he was fine. We stopped occasionally to race leaves down an open gutter, a kind of Pooh Leaves and we both enjoyed it. He then rode around the unused tennis courts and he seemed to be testing how fast he could ride his bike into the court perimeters without hurting himself. Each time he crashed he laughed, he’s either invincible or wasn’t trying hard enough.
