Day 4 - Egypt

21.04.11

This was probably the earliest morning I've ever had. Early morning call was at 02:35hrs to catch an early morning flight to Abu Simbel for sunrise, and it was worth it. I have been searching for a penis in all the hieroglyphics since I got here and I managed to find it today. Unfortunately you're not allowed to photograph stuff in the temples so I couldn't take a photo of it.

We returned and napped (Kerry was feeling better today!). Then we took a trip to the botanical gardens, again it was a slight disappointment, I was expecting more flowers. On the way there we had to cross the Nile (Fact: the Egyptian word for River is "Nile" and their word for desert is "Sahara"!) on a little boat. This part of the Nile is occupied by children on virtually anything that floats. They attach themselves to the boats full of tourists and sing songs hoping to get money. I was quite impressed and then sad to learn that some of these children earn more in a day than some adults do in a month, and therefore don't go to school and some get addicted to bad drugs.

A trip to a Nubian villages followed! Erm, more touristy crap.

At the night time the ship crew had arranged an Egyptian night and we were encouraged to turn up dressed in Egyptian outfits. Half of the boats occupants are German and they were encouraged to do the same. I think they all thought it was a little silly and consequently refused to join in the fun.
